    Types of shipping containers

    Home
Sea containers are large containers that are used to transport different types of cargo. Its use is relevant for many types of transportation, but the most popular is sea transportation. This is the best option for multimodal cargo transportation. The advantage is the ability to reload from one transport to another without the need to unload / load the cargo. The types of sea containers are regulated by ISO standards, they are classified according to several criteria: purpose, carrying capacity and design features.

    Classification by purpose

Sea containers for their intended purpose are of the following types:

    1. Universal (DC). These are sturdy boxes made of metal. They are waterproof and have a strong steel frame that can withstand increased loads. It can be used to transport small and large cargo. Goods can be packaged or bulk. The universal containers are equipped with hinged doors for easy loading and unloading. Manufactured in standard sizes. If the height is increased, there is a HC mark. Wide modules are designated PW. All other types belong to special purpose modules.
    2. Bulk. Used to transport bulk cargo. They have hatches for inspection, loading and unloading.
    3. Platforms (FR, PL). It is a base that has vertical posts and end walls. The latter can be folded or removed. They are used to transport heavy, long cargo. Sometimes platforms have corner fittings.
    4. Ventilated. They carry goods that need constant air circulation. They can have natural or forced ventilation.
    5. Thermally insulated. These are insulated blocks that can maintain the required temperature for a long time.
    6. Refrigerated. Just like the previous ones, they are aimed at maintaining the desired temperature. It is used to freeze food, medicine, flowers, etc.
    7. Tank containers. Suitable for transporting gaseous substances and liquids. They are a tank that is built into a steel frame.

    Capacity classification

    Sea containers are:

    1. large-capacity (withstanding more than 10 tons)
    2. medium tonnage (from 2.5 to 10 tons).

    Classification by construction

The design of sea containers depends on what kind of cargo will be transported in it. If these are non-separable appliances or large furniture, separate OT or HT containers are intended for this. There are containers with a reinforced UP structure. They are made from a thicker sheet of steel. Used to carry heavy loads.

    Universal containers consist of:

    1. frame made of high-strength steel
    2. floor, which can be made of plywood, board or waterproof fiberboard
    3. internal cladding, which is made of corrosion-resistant sheet steel, polymer materials, etc.
    4. thermal insulation made of epoxy foam, polystyrene or expanded polystyrene.

The design of the tanks can be different and depends on the transported products. Manufactured from:

    1. heating
    2. reducers
    3. thermal insulation
    4. additional parts: handrails, stairs, measuring instruments, etc.
    5. special inner coating.

To choose the right container, you need to take into account the requirements that apply to the cargo. If you need to use sea freight, contact AF-Group. Employees will advise on the choice of a container and tell you what to look for.
